Anoka by Shane Hawk My rating: 4 of 5 stars Very good for a first book. "Transfiguration" is by far the best story in the collection. Excellent atmosphere, generally good at not ham-fisting the social issues touched upon in the stories. The Story Notes are an excellent addition, particularly for white readers, such as me. Some of the stories could use a bit of refining, particularly in the way of "show, don't tell". The worst offender is in "Wounded" that contains the line "They were, after all, in ultra-white 1990s Minnesota". The reference to Infinite Jest in the following passages should be enough to *show* the reader that the story is set in 1996/1997. No need to narrate! Side note, would love to read a longer piece in the style of "Soilborne"! Will be following for future releases :) View all my reviews

Review - The Secrets of Colchester Hall by Sophie Barnes

The Secrets of Colchester Hall by Sophie Barnes My rating: 4 of 5 stars I received an advanced reader's copy of this novella via Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. 3.5 / 5 stars -> rounded up because I know this genre is not typically my cup of tea and I probably have some bias. The Secrets of Colchester Hall is a short, light novella encompassing the Regency-era romance of Lady Angelica and Viscount Sterling. The Viscount's home, Colchester Hall, is haunted by the spirit of his late wife who died under "mysterious" circumstances. Needless to say, the haunting places some strain on the courtship process. This novel is well-paced and Angelica is overall very likable. Personally, I could take or leave Sterling. The romance is somewhat whirlwind, but this doesn't tend to peeve me as much in historical fiction compared to modern romance. Review - Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon

Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon My rating: 5 of 5 stars I received an advanced reader's copy of this novel via Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. Honestly, I will be shocked if this isn't one of the most popular novels in spring/summer 2021, at least within the sci-fi and LGBT lit circles. Sorrowland is at the same time poignant and hopeful, haunting and soothing, submersing the reader into a gothic America scarred by the very real history of our country. There isn't much I can say plot-wise without spoiling this novel. It is best experienced, rather than summarized by a reviewer. The pacing is excellent, allowing the reader to experience Vern's inner (and outer) turmoil without dragging. Characters are both likable and believable. The plot fills itself with twists and turns that are foreshadowed in a subtle manner that doesn't insult the intelligence of the reader.
