Incubus by L.J. GreeneMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
4.5 stars --> rounded up to 5 because...
dammit, it's a page-turner. I have a pretty loose definition for what I consider "pulp". Boy oh boy, is this the pulpiest pulp that's ever pulped (at least on my bookshelf). Murder. Booze. Sex. Bizarre Marquis-de-Sade-esque antagonists, this novel has it all.
I'm a sucker for KJ Charles and, recently, Jordan L Hawk, but Incubus manages to push the typical lgbt romance/drama reader out of their comfort zone in all the right ways. Characters are shaded with a veneer of moral ambiguity that extends well beyond your stereotypical "hard boiled detective". Their actions and revelations make you question your own perception of the storyline over and over again. Fast paced, thrilling, and, at times, gruesome, this novel is fantastic fun.
I'm notoriously easy on pulp and pulp-adjunct novels, but there are a few points I would have changed to neaten up the story. The book itself could be cut by 50-100 pages. It's super long for its genre, but the pacing of the story makes its length bearable. The female characters could also have been given a bit more dimension (though, to be fair, this critique could be applied to the genre of noir, as a whole).
Overall, an excellent read. I'm actually pretty surprised this book isn't more popular.
